On January 1, 2000 german state-owned freight railroad company DB Cargo (Mainz) will merge with its Dutch counterpart NS Cargo (Utrecht) in one of the biggest rail consolidation moves in European history. The merged company, provisionally named Rail Cargo Europe (RCE; Mainz), will have sales of about DM7 billion($3.8 billion)/year and transport more than 310 million m.t./year of freight.
Chemical companies hope the new company will provide improved service at more competitive prices. The clearest benefit of the merger will be smoother border crossings.
