The U.S. government is supporting the official Chinese account of how a Tibetan scholar from Newton was gravely injured while in police custody in a remote Chinese province, the State Department said yesterday.
Daja Mizu Meston, 29, suffered a three-story fall after he was arrested for investigating a Chinese resettlement project in Tibet that human-rights groups view as a move to stamp out the region's religion and ethnicity.
"We have no evidence that Mr. Meston suffered from abuse by the Chinese authorities," said Michelle King, a State Department spokeswoman, reading from a brief. He reportedly suffered broken vertebrae and internal injuries.
