Sep. 22 -- Two East Bay mayors want Caltrans to scrap its plans to rebuild the eastern span of the Bay Bridge and instead focus on a major retrofit, a suggestion that one Bay Area transportation official criticized as being irresponsible.
Mayors Shirley Dean of Berkeley and Rosemary Corbin of Richmond say they believe retrofitting the bridge would be more cost effective and take less time than Caltrans' plan to rebuild.
And frankly, they say, they've had it with controversy surrounding bridge design, alignment and traffic capacity.
