Sep. 28 -- Shoney's Inc. said Monday it is closing 72 underperforming restaurants nationwide, including at least four in Georgia.
The four Georgia restaurants closed Monday, said Shoney's spokeswoman Sandy McCaffrey. She declined to say whether others in Georgia will be shut down, citing a "policy to inform our employees prior to closing a store."
Shoney's has 17 company-owned units in the state and 61 franchised restaurants. Only company-owned restaurants are affected by the closings, which are expected to be completed at the end of the fiscal fourth quarter on Oct. 31.
