Last month, the Port of Wilmington, DE, opened a new ware house that puts fruit asleep to prevent ripening and extend product life. Nearby, the port facilities at Camden, NJ, expanded a refrigerated facility to lease to one of the major fruit and vegetable companies.
On the opposite coast, port officials in San Diego formed a joint venture to resuscitate an under-used cold storage facility to bring in new perishable import business from Australia and Chile. And the Mississippi State Port Authority in Gulfport built a new refrigerated facility that induced one company to transfer and consolidate its banana import business from two other Gulf cities.
