On Mexico's northern border are seven cities that as of 1990 boasted over 100,000 inhabitants each--Tijuana Mexicali, Nogales, Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa, and Matamoros. Their combined population of 2.8 million people accounts for nearly 7% of Mexicans residing in medium-sized cities and metropolitan areas.
