Oct. 2 -- BP cleared the last major hurdle to begin building the Northstar oil field off Alaska's North Slope Friday when the state issued a lease to allow a pipeline across state property.
"This is a major milestone toward a busy winter construction season," said BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. spokesman Ronnie Chappell. "We're very pleased."
That's a mood swing for BP.
Environmentally sensitive and politically explosive, Northstar has been debated by conservationists, legislators, governors, bureaucrats and North Slope whalers since BP proposed to develop the oil field in 1995.
