Oct. 2 -- It's been 40 years since Vancouver residents Ed Pietz and Tod McClaskey opened the Thunderbird Motor Inn in Portland. Later renamed the Red Lion, that hotel was the antecedent to a 54-hotel chain the two partners built and based in here in Vancouver.
The two founders sold their hotels 15 years ago and nearly all the old Red Lions were renamed. But the old partners each took a few minutes this week to reflect on Red Lion's legacy, as its new owners prepare to revive the brand by returning its name to several former Red Lion hotels.
