ROBERT THURMAN is an American professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies and, in the mid 1960s, became the first westerner ordained as a Buddhist monk in the Tibetan tradition of Buddhist monasticism. The present Dalai Lama, who in the introduction to Thurman's book refers to Thurman as "one of my oldest Western friends," performed the final ordination ceremony himself.
