As everyone knows by now, this is a posthumous book, put together from Hemingway's notes on his 1950s stay in Kenya with his fourth wife, Mary. This means that although the book's texture, its gut, belongs to Hemingway, the form of it does not. Responsibility for the selection and final impression lies with Hemingway's middle son, Patrick.

It is very clear very quickly that Patrick was not the man to make this book. His introduction shows little feeling for the music and flow of English prose. The editing, or failure to edit, certain obviously unpolished ...
