Financial woes and forbidden love in a 19th century family inform the "Degas and New Orleans" exhibit, running May 1 to Aug. 29 at the New Orleans Museum of Art.
Edgar Degas was the only French impressionist to visit the United States. The Paris artist's unique studies of home and work in New Orleans are the only images ever created of American life by an impressionist of Degas' stature.
The NOMA exhibit will reunite 17 of the 22 works that Degas painted while he lived with his mother's family in their rented mansion during the winter of 1872-73.
