The shopping list alone was enough to clog arteries and pad hips: 3 1/2 pounds of butter, 8 cups of confectioners' sugar, 4 1/2 cups of nuts. But the mandate was clear, and no sacrifice could be too great: Out of the dozens of wonderful recipes submitted by Herald readers for our holiday cookie contest, our mission was to test the top five and select the very best one.
A tough job, made tougher by the fact that everyone has a different notion of cookie perfection. One person holds out for chocolate; another demands fruit and nuts.
