As the holiday season heats up, so does the auction-house sale room, as evidenced by results from three local auction houses.
An unsigned oil-on-canvas portrait of the clipper ship Flying Fish, and attributed to James Edward Buttersworth, brought a resounding $96,250 at Eldred's Nov. 20 and 21 sale in East Dennis. The Flying Fish was built by Donald MacKay, who worked at Sampson & Tappan shipyard in East Boston.
The clippers Westward Ho and Staghound, built by MacKay, also were painted by Buttersworth and framed similarly to the Flying Fish piece.
The paintings came from a Cape Cod consignor and went to a West Coast dealer.
