Although he comes from a family of musicians, Roberto Abbado resisted the lure of music as a child. The nephew of conductor Claudio Abbado and son of pianist Marcello Abbado, head of the Milan Conservatory, he had his heart set on becoming an aircraft engineer. He believed he was uninterested in music although he tells a charming story about himself that shows how wrong he was.
"When I was very small, it was beautiful to sit under the piano of my father and listen to him play," said the conductor during a recent telephone conversation. "The sound under the instrument had a tremendous physical impact."
