The elegant orchid may be an exotic tropical plant, but "the average person should not be intimidated by it," said Lynn Ackerman, managing horticulturist at the Lyman Estate greenhouses in Waltham. Although Ackerman cultivates orchids in a magnificent greenhouse complex, she said some orchids will do well on an ordinary windowsill.
During a two-part workshop Wednesday and Nov. 25 at the 18th century mansion on the property, Ackerman will reveal some the secrets of growing orchids.
Although the course will "only touch the tip of the iceberg in orchid cultivation," she said, "this does not mean that orchids are difficult plants to cultivate at home."
