Alternative medicine continues to grow in popularity at an astounding pace, says a survey that shows four in 10 Americans last year used an unconventional therapy.
The survey in today's Journal of the American Medical Association found that visits to alternative health care providers jumped by nearly 50 percent since 1990.
Last year alone, Americans spent $27 billion in out-of-pocket expenses for alternative medical treatments and supplies, according to the survey conducted by Dr. David Eisenberg of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Center for Alternative Medicine Research.
