El Nino's gone, but his fickle sister, La Nina, is at the door. She may be dragging in a colder, snowier winter with her.
Then again, she might not.
La Nina, the periodic cooling of equatorial Pacific waters by only a couple of degrees is expected to bring dry, hot weather to the South and more wintry weather than usual to the country's northern tier. That's in contrast to El Nino, which warmed up our winter last year.
But even though the last La Nina coincided with the snowiest winter ever in Massachusetts three years ago when 107 inches fell in the Boston area, the event historically doesn't mean a significant shift from normal in Southern ...
