The Lyric Opera of Chicago gave memorable performances Oct. 9 and 10 of two vastly different operas: Marvin David Levy's "Mourning Becomes Electra" and Ponchielli's "La Gioconda."
And each opera starred a stellar soprano giving a Windy City performance of international caliber: Lauren Flanigan in "Mourning" and Jane Eaglen in "Gioconda."
"Mourning Becomes Electra" is the Eugene O'Neill play based on the Greek legend of Agamemnon, whose murder by his wife was avenged by their daughter, Electra.
It takes place in a seaport town near Boston at the end of the Civil War, where a mother and daughter anticipate the return from battle of the father ...
