There have been plenty of movie monsters. But does anyone think Jason or Freddie or, heaven forbid, Chucky will have the staying power of Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and the Wolfman?
Not on your life.
The suave vampire, the shambling monster and the tormented lycanthrope are now fixed in the popular imagination, common cultural currency. And it's not the Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley novels we remember, not the European myths of vampire and werewolf. It's the Universal horror movies of the 1930s.
So as we don our Monica and Bill costumes and begin the long drive to Halloween, it seems appropriate to dial up Turner Classic Movies' weekendlong ...
