Like its counterpart in the real world, the Big Dig's Web site introduces itself with a minor detour, the cyberspace equivalent of a line of orange cones across the bottom of a Central Artery onramp.

On arrival, you're routed to a page that exists for one reason only: to let you know that you have, indeed, reached www.bigdig.com, the Internet home of the Central Artery/Tunnel project.

Sometimes called a "splash page," this kind of welcome is just an annoyance, especially if you're in a hurry to look something up. It goes away in a few seconds, and you can click through it, but you'll wish your computer had a horn to honk.
