John Mellencamp was still known as John Cougar when he recorded his biggest hit, "Jack & Diane," in 1982.
He's done a lot of growing up since then.
Now Jack and Diane have grown up, too. The rock couple of the '80s make their return in the song "Eden is Burning" on Mellencamp's new self-titled album, in stores Tuesday.
"You have no idea how many times since that song was written I've been asked about those people," lifelong Indiana resident Mellencamp says from his summer home in Hilton Head, S.C. "My response was always the same. 'It's a (expletive) song! Jack and Diane are not real. I made those people up.' And the response was always, 'No, ...
