Dr. George S. Kurland of Newton, former head of the Electrocardiography Department, died Wednesday at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 78.
Born and raised in Boston, he graduated from Boston Latin School in 1936, magna cum laude from Harvard University with an economics degree in 1940 and Harvard Medical School's A class in 1943.
Dr. Kurland, who started the first cardiac catheterization laboratory at Beth Israel Hospital, began his 55-year career there as an intern and chief resident from 1943 to 1946. He became a research fellow in 1948 and later a physician in medicine and the head of the Electrocardiography ...
