Joseph A. Kelly, a former Providence Journal reporter who directed Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of a gun battle, died Saturday in Warwick, R.I. He was 92.
Mr. Kelly became a legendary figure for his exposure of corruption within Pawtucket city government.
"Joe Kelly was a model for generations of new reporters," Carol J. Young, the Journal's deputy executive editor, told the Providence Sunday Journal. "He was tough, gruff and persistent. Above all else, he believed reporters should be fair, accurate and relentless in their efforts to expose government wrongdoing."
Young was a Journal reporter when Mr. Kelly was a bureau manager.
