In Jerzy Kosinki'sbrilliant book "Being There" (and in the movie of the same name starring Peter Sellers), the country falls for a simple-minded gardener uttering lovely truisms.
Like the mythical Chauncy Gardener, the Dalai Lama, Tibet's leader in exile, has enraptured Americans with his calls for inner peace and compassion.
Those who flocked to Brandeis University during his recent visit were not disappointed. Not only did His Holiness touch on nearly every cause near to progressive hearts - the environment, conflict resolution, economic equity - he spoke in such moving generalities few could disagree.
