His gentle and bespectacled face beams from alcoves in Boston-area stores and restaurants, on workplace desks and in small shrines in modest homes.
For Tibetans in exile, the visage of a self-described "simple monk" binds them to a homeland some have never seen and some will not see again.
The Dalai Lama "is very important for all Tibetans," said Tsering Sangpo, 54, who fled Tibet at age 8. "He is the one who can command all the respect."
On a recent evening, Sangpo and other Tibetans anxiously debated details (food to be served, dances to be staged) in preparation for the Tibetan leader's visit to Brandeis University tomorrow and Saturday. ...
