"I am an astronaut who has returned from the moon," says Anne-Sophie Mutter. Having landed on Earth again, she has taken up the 10 Beethoven Violin-Piano Sonatas.
The German violinist has performed a good bit of contemporary music in recent years (works by Lutoslawski, Moret, Rhim and Penderecki) and is now returning to her roots in the Viennese classical repertory.
She is also celebrating the 10th year of her collaboration with the American pianist and period keyboard player Lambert Orkis. The two are performing the Beethoven sonatas in three programs arranged chronologically and entitled "Beethoven: Face to Face 1998."
