You can't fight City Hall but you may be able to buy it.
Mayor Thomas M. Menino yesterday announced a $250,000 proposal to study future alternatives for the building, including possibly putting it on the market.
"We are sitting on a prime piece of real estate in downtown Boston," Menino's chief of staff, David Passafaro, said.
Other possible alternatives: Leasing the building, moving its offices to the federal courthouse down the street or building a new City Hall.
The news caught some residents of the three-decade-old building by surprise.
