A new surgical abortion procedure is now being offered by Planned Parenthood that allows pregnancies to be terminated within two weeks of conception, maybe sooner.
In the past, surgical abortions were not performed earlier than six weeks from a woman's last menstrual period, or four weeks after conception.
With the new procedure, abortions are being performed as early as four weeks after the last period, or two weeks after conception.
Eventually, the procedure will be able to be done within eight days of conception, said Dr. Jerry Edwards, medical director of Planned Parenthood's Houston clinic, who developed the procedure.
