Gay filmmaker Tim Kirkman is no kleptomaniac, but he isn't above stealing a little publicity.
Especially when the forum for it is just a few steps from the Senate floor in Washington.
"Dear Jesse" is Kirkman's first movie, a documentary about North Carolina's notorious Sen. Jesse Helms. Already a hit at film festivals, the North Carolina native's film is an effort to understand the homophobic Republican senator who's proud to be known for saying an emphatic "No!" to programs supporting abortion rights, affirmative action, the arts and AIDS research. It opens tomorrow at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline.
