PORTADOWN, Northern Ireland - On one level, this town has been Northern Ireland's most dangerous flashpoint since 1995, when nationalists renewed their efforts to keep the annual Orange Order parade from proceeding down heavily Catholic Garvaghy Road.
Two years ago, David Trimble, then a mid-level unionist politician, made his reputation by jumping into the fray and insisting that police stand aside and allow bowler-topped Protestants to proceed along the Garvaghy Road section of their circular marching route.
