Allergy sufferers just can't win. Record rains in June may have washed away most of that annoying yellow pollen, but now another irritant has emerged: mold spores.
"If we didn't have the rain that wiped away the pollen, we wouldn't have a bad mold season," said Dr. John O'Laughlin, chairman of the allergy clinic at the Lahey Hitchcock Clinic in Burlington. "It's a Catch-22."
But it rained - most of the month for that matter - and that's all a mold spore needs to thrive.
"Areas that are hot and humid promote mold," said Dr. Oren Schaefer, a pulmonary and allergy physician at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.
