Robert F. Sweeney of Natick, a retired Wellesley police officer and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, died Wednesday at Columbia Metrowest Medical Center in Natick after a lengthy illness. He was 63.

Born in Newton, Mr. Sweeney attended Wellesley schools. He graduated from Wellesley High School, where he was a standout athlete.

Mr. Sweeney was a police officer for the town of Wellesley and previously for the town of Natick. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.
