Maybe smaller is better after all.
An increasing number of saltwater anglers who chase striped bass, bluefish and other species with big, unwieldy surfcasting rods that launch big, unwieldy lures are going to smaller and lighter fly tackle.
Long the equipment choice of angling "purists" whose targets have been the trout of mountain streams and ponds, the super-light rods, sleek reels, and artfully crafted flies have found their way to the New England seacoast.
From Sheepscot Bay in Maine to Rhode Island's southern salt ponds, tidal streams and protected inlets are attracting more and more numbers of saltwater fly casters.
