Singer Jean-Francois "Oscar" Hammel has a vivid memory of the first time his French salsa group, Fatal Mambo, performed on a double bill with a Latin act.
It took place in France about five years ago, and the reaction to his group troubled Hammel.
"We opened for the great Cuban group Los Van Van and they were laughing and laughing and laughing at us," he recalled. "So I went down from the stage and asked, 'What's happening? Don't you like it?'
"They just kissed me and said: 'Man, it's great. We're enjoying it. You're bringing our music to French people.' Now we are very good friends."
