Imagine this: About 400 million years ago there was a coral reef, home to thousands of plants and animals, in the Midwest. What is now Indiana and Kentucky rested beneath a tropical sea 20 degrees south of the equator. Fish were the most advanced life form in the aquatic world during this Devonian period dubbed the "Age of Fish."
Through the ages, layer upon layer of silt, sediment, plants and animals accumulated. The dead bodies of sea creatures became entombed in this mud. Eons passed, the sea dried up, and the mud hardened into stone, fossilizing the remains in five distinct layers.
