Spanish missionaries founded San Antonio near an Indian village 280 years ago in a woodsy part of southeast Texas. Today, San Antonio is the largest U.S. city with a Hispanic majority (56 percent).
In the center of the city there's a small adobe shrine that is dear to Texan hearts - the Alamo. Also known as "the Cradle of Texas Liberty," this battered former mission church is where 187 Texas volunteers - including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie - died fighting Santa Anna's Mexican Army. A few weeks later, Texans defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto to the cry of "Remember the Alamo!" That ended Mexican rule in Texas.
