Twenty-eight-year-old George Tillman makes his directorial debut with "Soul Food," a sweet-natured examination of an African-American family whose lives start to unravel when the matriarch falls ill and dies. Featuring a large ensemble cast that includes Vanessa Williams, Vivica Fox, Nia Long, Michael Beach, Mekhi Phifer and Irma P. Hall as Mother Joe, the film is an assured debut from a young filmmaker who only a few years ago was scrambling to get work as a production assistant on a Spike Lee commercial shooting in his native Chicago.
"I had to drive him to the airport one night and I got lost," Tillman recalled. "He wasn't too happy."
