They had names of statesmen like William Bradford and George Frisbie Hoar. They had names of orators like William Lloyd Garrison and the preacher Phillips Brooks.
A proud city saluted them all and others by etching their names on schools. A divided city ended their reign when it closed those same schools down, along with two dozen others in mostly black neighborhoods.
Hattie McKinnis remembers them all, particularly the Garrison school in Roxbury. In a school named for the abolitionist, students studied their lessons with pride.
