Unidentified flying objects have been spotted all over the country with regularity since World War II. Here are four of the more notable sightings:
WASHINGTON, D.C. On the nights of July 19 and 20, 1952, the U.S. military scrambled fighter jets in a futile attempt to identify or shoot down six to nine UFOs that repeatedly buzzed the nation's capital.
People on the ground witnessed the discs clearly as the jets pursued them across the sky. Pictures of the "flying saucers" appeared in the newspaper the next day.
Official explanation: Temperature inversion.
