After the razzle-dazzle of the mansions and the hurly-burly of the waterfront, most visitors to Newport, R.I., head home thinking they have "done" the City by the Sea. Those who linger for a closer look, however, will uncover the city's intensely rich collection of art, antiques, architecture and antiquities.
The best way to survey these Newport specialties is to walk a couple of streets in from the waterfront tracing a loop from Bellevue Avenue north of the mansions down to Touro Street. Go left on Spring Street, then to Franklin Street and back up to Memorial and Bellevue. The distance is about 1 1/2 miles.
