RUMFORD, R.I. - There was a bonus prize lurking in the background during yesterday's completion of the 36th Northeast Amateur Invitational Golf Tournament at Wannamoisett Country Club.
One of the elite tournaments on the national amateur schedule, the Northeast has always been worth winning. But when 1997 college player of the year Brad Elder, 22, of Overland Park, Kan., tapped in his par putt for a 3-shot win over 46-year-old Paul Simson, he most likely made a serious impact on the selection of this year's U.S. Walker Cup team.
