The diet pills known as "fen/phen" and "Redux" have been wildly popular in Massachusetts since being approved for use last year. But dieters got a reality check in August when a study linked the pills to a sometimes fatal lung disorder.
The study - in the New England Journal of Medicine - found that dieters taking fenfluramine, also known as Pondimine, or a newer version, dexfenfluramine, also known as Redux, had six times the risk of high blood pressure in the lungs.
The NEJM study, conducted in Europe, warned:
