African movies almost never get bona fide theatrical runs. And when they do, as in the case of "The Gods Must Be Crazy," they're hardly representative of the continent's moviemaking output.
The eight programs in the Museum of Fine Arts' "New African Cinema," which runs today through Jan. 24, offer not just a cross-section of African moviemaking but also a cross-section of Africa itself, representing 11 nations and at least that many languages.
The movies in the series almost all deal in topical subjects, sometimes using a very modern, satirical style to examine contemporary issues of everyday life.
