"Miracle on 34th Street" is the Christmas fable of which everyone has some sort of memory.
There's an adorable but serious little girl, her skeptical working mother, two Manhattan retail giants ready to commercialize Christmas and a man who says he's really Santa Claus.
It may not be on many lists of "The 100 All-Time Greatest Films" like "The Wizard of Oz," but "Miracle" is a movie that endures.
As the original celebrates its 50th anniversary, and with the big-budget 1994 Fox remake making its network debut tonight, it's good to be reminded how smart, touching and reassuring a fable the first version was regarding belief in a cynical world.
