Grand Bahama Island may not sport the colonial charm of nearby Nassau, but it has enough casinos, golf and shopping to keep any American busy. Go a few miles outside its vibrant, growing twin cities of Freeport and Port Lucaya and you will find whispering pine groves and powdery white sand beaches where you can walk for miles in sun-kissed solitude.
A few relaxing days of gambling and beachcombing costs a bit less than in Nassau, and there's a lot more elbow room. It's possible to spend an entire weekend on Grand Bahama without once being approached by strolling vendors or hair braiders.
