With Pedro Martinez locked up as the staff ace for at least one year, Red Sox manager Jimy Williams yesterday began naming the guys who will play defense behind the former Expo.
After first baseman Mo Vaughn, shortstop Nomar Garciaparra and catchers Jim Leyritz and Scott Hatteberg, the list gets a little hazy.
Much of the fog stems from doubts that third baseman Tim Naehring, rehabilitating from surgery on his right throwing elbow, will be ready.
"I don't think we'll really know the status of Tim Naehring until we get to spring training," said Williams, in town from his Dunedin, Fla., home to welcome Martinez to Boston. "We'll just have to wait ...
