In an interview in The New York Times earlier this year, pianist Stephen Drury lamented the fact that he had prepared the two Brahms Piano Concertos for this sesquicentennial year, but had no takers. His friend, New England Conservatory colleague and frequent collaborator, Benjamin Zander, picked up the gauntlet thus dropped and engaged Drury to play the First Concerto with the Boston Philharmonic. The choice of the pianist was somewhat unconventional but full of fascinating possibilities.
