BELFAST, Northern Ireland -- In a historic event many Britons thought they would neversee, political allies of the Irish Republican Army held talks yesterday with British Prime Minister Tony Blair inside his London residence at 10 Downing Street.
The meeting between leaders of Sinn Fein - the IRA's political wing - and Blair marked the first time Sinn Fein has entered the seat of British government since 1921 treaty negotiations which ended the Anglo-Irish War (1919-1921) and resulted in the partition of Ireland.
Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams described the occasion as "a good day for Anglo-Irish relations."
