Even as a "really awful" high school band 10 years ago, Blues Traveler was building the sense of community that would help it reach a level of popularity the quartet could only dream of as teenagers.
Guitarist Chan Kinchla said Blues Band, as it was called at Princeton (N.J.) High School, was "a lot louder and a lot less skillful" than it is now. But even then the blues-rockers had two things going for them: camaraderie and the dynamic harmonica playing of John Popper.
