It's not easy to build a reputation as "the Venice of the Americas," but Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - with 300 miles of navigable waterways and a vigorous cultural arts scene - richly deserves the title.
Instead of gondolas, though, Fort Lauderdale has yachts. The canal-laced city is one of three major yachting centers along the Eastern Seaboard, joining Newport, R.I., and Annapolis, Md. Located about 20 miles north of Miami and a short drive away from the airboats and alligators of Florida's Everglades, this beautifully rejuvenated oceanside city is by far the largest and most varied of the three.
